Root Canal Treatment

You have most likely heard rumors about root canal treatment being a difficult procedure. Fortunately, times change and dentistry advances, making a root canal at Smiles Art Dentistry no more complex than filling a tooth.

Why We Recommend Root Canal Treatment

A root infection develops when bacteria reach the inner pulp chamber of a tooth through a crack, deep cavity, or trauma. The pulp area contains the blood vessels and nerves that keep the tooth alive, and root canal treatment is necessary to remove the infection, relieve pain, and preserve the tooth's structure.

The Importance of Prompt Treatment

An infected tooth won't heal on its own, and postponing treatment can have serious consequences. The infection can spread beyond the tooth to your jawbone, neighboring teeth, and even into your bloodstream, and become life-threatening. If you have a severe toothache or notice swelling in the affected area, call Smiles Art Dentistry so we can provide the prompt relief and care you need to feel better.

Comfortable, Efficient Treatment

Understanding the steps involved in getting a root canal can help soothe anxiety and leave you feeling informed about why we recommend the procedure. You can expect the following steps during a root canal:

  1. First, we thoroughly numb the area with local anesthetic to immediately relieve pain and prepare for treatment.
  2. Next, we use a small protective sheet called a dental dam to isolate the tooth and keep it clean and dry during the procedure.
  3. Dr. Abed creates a small access hole in the tooth and uses rotary endodontic instruments to gently and efficiently remove infected pulp tissue.
  4. After thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting the canals, we prepare the area for a biocompatible filling that helps prevent further infection.
  5. The final step is placing a temporary restoration to protect the tooth as it heals.
  6. In about two weeks, when healing is complete, Dr. Abed will place a crown or permanent filling to protect the tooth and restore full function.
