Are you considering dental implants with Smiles Art Dentistry in Houston? If so, understanding the entire dental implant process can help alleviate any fears you might have so you can enter into treatment feeling confident. Below, we’ll break down the timeline of a dental implant so that you know what to expect.

Step 1: Consultation and Examination

The first step in the dental implant process is a consultation and examination with our dentist. During this visit, we’ll review your medical history and evaluate your current condition to determine if dental implant restoration is the best option for you.

During this 45-to-60-minute visit, we’ll explore your personalized treatment options, including whether any preliminary steps—like a gentle extraction or bone grafting—are needed to build a strong foundation for your implant. We will also share practical tips on optimizing your recovery, such as temporarily pausing smoking, to ensure the absolute best results for your new smile.

Step 2: Pre-Treatment Surgeries

If your evaluation shows that your jaw needs a little extra support, preparatory steps like a gentle extraction or bone grafting will happen here. Because building a strong, healthy foundation takes time, body-natural healing at this stage can take anywhere from 3 to 12 months before we comfortably move forward with your implant placement.

Step 3: Implant Surgery Appointment

During this precise appointment, we will gently place the biocompatible titanium implant into your jawbone, where it functions just like a natural tooth root. While the visit typically takes about 1 to 2 hours depending on your unique needs, your comfort is always our top priority. Afterward, a remarkable natural process called osseointegration begins—over the next 3 to 4 months, the implant will securely fuse with your natural bone, creating an incredibly strong, permanent foundation for your new smile.

Step 4: Follow-up Appointments

Once your implant has beautifully integrated, you’ll return for a quick and comfortable visit. Using advanced digital scanners, we will capture precise 3D images and impressions of your teeth, gums, and implant—with absolutely no messy putty. We then use this high-tech data to custom-craft your final restoration, whether it’s a single crown or a bridge, tailored to fit your smile perfectly.

Step 5: Abutment Placement

About 1 or 2 weeks before your final appointment, we’ll place both an abutment and healing collar overtop of your existing implant site so that it is ready for final restoration placement.

Step 6: Final Implant Restoration

Finally, once everything has healed correctly we’ll remove any temporary dentures or healing collars. We’ll check to make sure you’ve healed properly and then place your final crown or bridge permanently onto the abutment.

There you have it! We hope this guide gives you a clear, comforting roadmap of what to expect on your journey. Restoring your smile is a life-changing milestone, and knowing each step brings you that much closer to entering your treatment with total confidence.
